1000 Flowers for the Planet - #402 Discover Your Ancestry

1000 Flowers for the Planet - #402 Discover Your Ancestry

Lots of people are not the least bit interested in history and don’t think much can be gained by looking at the past, but when you watch a show like Who Do You Think You Are, you’ll see how people’s perspective of their own lives can dramatically change when they do discover their ancestry. It’s quite a different thing from studying the history books. When you discover your ancestry it’s personal, and that makes all the difference.
When you learn where you have come from, you better understand where you are and where you’re going. Understanding your ancestors can help you discover who you are yourself and why you do things the way you do them. You may discover your ancestors came from a different country, that they were slaves, or convicts, or fought in a war. Learning what they endured or how they thought may change your perspective on things, which often leads to a better understanding of the weaknesses in us all, and understanding leads to better reactions and improved actions. When we study how we fit personally into history, we can learn how to make things better for today and beyond.
