How to Set Goals ... in 10 Steps

STEP 1
THE GOAL
Decide what it is you want to achieve

STEP 2
STARTING POINT
Write today's date

STEP 3
FINISHING POINT
Write the date you want to achieve this goal. Take this step a little further by writing why you need to achieve it by this date.

STEP 4
CLARITY
Now write down more information about your goal. You need to be very clear on several points:

   a) be SPECIFIC about what you want to achieve. You may write that you 'want to lose weight', but  how much weight would you like to lose? So write down as much of the detail as you would like to write. WHY do you want this? Why is it so important to you to achieve this goal?

   b) make it MEASURABLE, that is, how can you be sure you're working towards what you want to achieve? How much time do you need to achieve this?

   c) make it ATTAINABLE. I'm sorry but there's no point aiming to lose 20 kilos in the next month. You'll probably need a little longer than that.

   d) Make it REALISTIC. Refer to 'C' above. Furthermore, aiming to lose 10 kilos when you really only need to lose a couple to be healthy may mean you need to check your headspace.

   e) Make it TANGIBLE. Losing weight is a very tangible goal, and a rewarding one when you achieve it. Check your goal will truly provide you with the outcome you desire.

STEP 5
REWARD
Before beginning the hard work, take a look at what your reward will be when you've achieved this goal. Write it down, noting all the benefits you and/or others will receive.

STEP 6

PLAN
The only way to achieve your goal is to take action. Write down the first thing you need to do towards achieving your goal. If you can, write all the steps you may need to take but limit it to 10 steps towards your goal, otherwise you may overwhelm yourself. If you don't know all the steps, thats FINE, don't stress. It's okay to write one step at a time. Perhaps you would prefer to take a blank sheet of paper and brainstorm - just write any ideas you have that may help towards achieving your goal: names of people to ask for help; places that provide further information; internet search ideas; tools or supplies required; skills needed; time required; stumbling blocks that need overcoming; costs; a plan for when you go off track.

STEP 6
ACTION
This is the most important part in achieving your goal. Remember the journey of 1,000 miles starts with ONE STEP. Make today the day you do the first thing towards your goal, do that first action required, then KEEP GOING.

STEP 7
Keep going ...

STEP 8
Keep going ...

STEP 9
Keep going ...

STEP 10
ENJOY
the reward of achieving your goal. Acknowledge to yourself how hard you have worked to achieve it and that you certainly DO deserve it. Take TIME to enjoy ... be happy ... feel good.
CONGRATULATIONS
