1000 Flowers for the Planet - #372 Save the Bears

The plight of bears is a sad one indeed. Asiatic bears are kept in cages so small the bear cannot move at all, and they have catheters inserted into their gall bladder to milk them of their bile, which is used in traditional Asian medicines. In Cambodia the smallest of the bears, the sun bear, are butchered for bear paw soup. Bears are sometimes used for entertaining tourists by being forced to dance and perform. At www.freethebears.org you will find a group that is achieving amazing success in saving bears by working with communities in Asia and finding sustainable ways to support themselves and care for their environment.
Sun bears, the smallest species and the least studied, is an endangered species. The Asiatic black bear is an endangered species, as is the sloth bear and the Andean bear. We need to act now, before these animals are lost to us forever. This can be achieved by refusing to watch dancing bears as tourist attractions and certainly never paying for that type of entertainment. Help others help the bears by making financial contributions on a regular basis, or volunteer at a bear sanctuary. Help put a stop to the cruel and painful practice of the bear bile industry and rescue bears from a life of misery and mental torment by urging governments to ban these practices. And if you can’t do any of that, then simply speak up. We all have a voice, we can all spread the word and encourage change for the better.
